8.1/10
The simplest first-visit choice, with quieter streets toward Lehel.
The strongest combination of character, doorstep sights and hotel quality takes first place, despite the weakest value for money.

Stay here for Munich's classic introduction: Marienplatz, the Residenz, Viktualienmarkt and the shopping streets between them. The Altstadt makes spontaneous sightseeing easy, while Maximilianstrasse adds grand architecture and designer shopping. This is our clearest recommendation for a short first visit without a car.
Choose the atmosphere carefully. Around Marienplatz, sightseeing crowds are part of the experience; east toward St.-Anna-Platz, Lehel feels more residential, with the Isar and English Garden nearby. Lehel is the better compromise for quieter evenings, but neither part would be our first choice for a trip built around neighborhood bars.
