Axel's take: 8.3/10

A comfortable, good-value Munich base with useful transport links and limited extras. a design-led, no-frills city hotel in Maxvorstadt, scored for what it is.

Elaya Munich City is a design-led, no-frills city hotel: a strong pick for travelers who want comfortable basics rather than full-service facilities. Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds, helpful staff and the breakfast buffet. Stiglmaierplatz U-Bahn is a short walk away, making sightseeing straightforward without staying in the busiest part of the old town. Complimentary coffee and tea downstairs are a welcome extra.

The compromises are mostly practical. Standard rooms are compact, and guests note the lack of in-room kettles. The hotel confirms there is no bar or lunch-and-dinner restaurant, despite some booking listings suggesting otherwise. Breakfast and garage parking cost extra, and reception closes at 11 p.m.; later arrivals need an advance key-safe code. We'd choose it for a short city break, not an amenity-heavy stay.

• Best for: couples on short city breaks; value-conscious sightseers; travelers using public transport

• Watch out for: compact standard rooms; late arrivals require a key-safe code; breakfast and parking cost extra

• Location: Maxvorstadt base near Stiglmaierplatz U-Bahn; convenient for museums and onward transport.

• Rooms: Standard rooms are 17 square meters; comfortable beds earn praise, but kettles are absent.

• Cleanliness: Consistently praised across guest-review sites, with a strong Booking.com cleanliness rating.

• Service: Generally friendly and helpful; official reception hours are 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, air conditioning and communal hot drinks; breakfast buffet, but no bar or dinner restaurant.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast and limited garage parking are extra; arrange access in advance after 11 p.m.
