Axel's take: 8.8/10

A comfortable station-side base, with standout breakfast and a less appealing street outside. An independent, upper-mid-range hotel and boardinghouse near Munich Central Station, scored for what it is.

Schiller5 is an independent, upper-mid-range hotel and boardinghouse that gets the important things right. It's a strong pick for rail travelers and longer city stays: most rooms have kitchenettes, and complimentary minibar drinks add useful value. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the cleanliness, comfortable beds, helpful staff and varied breakfast; Booking.com feedback reinforces that picture. This is practical comfort rather than a full-service luxury stay.

The main compromise is outside. Several guests find the station-area streets scruffy or uncomfortable after dark, although rooms are frequently described as quiet. Major construction at Munich Hauptbahnhof is another nearby drawback. Breakfast may cost extra, parking needs advance planning, and there's no lunch or dinner service. We'd skip it if a polished neighborhood or extensive hotel facilities matter more than transport convenience.

• Best for: Rail travelers and day-trippers; Longer stays with kitchenette convenience; City explorers who prioritize comfort

• Watch out for: Scruffy station-area streets after dark; Major construction at nearby Hauptbahnhof; Breakfast and parking can cost extra

• Location: Steps from the main station and walkable to the old town, but guests dislike the immediate streets.

• Rooms: Air-conditioned, with soundproof windows; most have kitchenettes, and guests often report quiet nights.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com, Expedia and recent Tripadvisor reviews.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff earn repeated praise; reception operates around the clock.

• Amenities: Breakfast buffet, lounge, free minibar drinks and guest laundry; no lunch or dinner service.

• Fees and surprises: Check breakfast inclusion; reserve paid garage parking ahead and confirm vehicle-height restrictions.
