Axel's take: 7.7/10

A practical station-side base, provided you can live with tight rooms and tram noise. a no-frills economy hotel near Munich’s main station, scored for what it is.

ibis Muenchen City is a no-frills economy hotel that makes most sense for a short, transport-focused stay. The main station is a few minutes’ walk away, and central Munich is easily explored on foot or by tram. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, while breakfast earns consistently good feedback. Cleanliness is generally a strength rather than a recurring concern. It’s a good pick if you want straightforward accommodation rather than somewhere to linger.

The compromises are space and sleep quality. Rooms and bathrooms are notably compact, and street-facing rooms can pick up tram noise; request a courtyard-facing room. Several guests also report weak cooling, and management confirms the air conditioning depends on outside temperatures. We’d skip it for a spacious, reliably cool summer retreat, but it delivers the basics for a brief city break.

• Best for: rail travelers; short sightseeing breaks; solo travelers packing light

• Watch out for: compact rooms and bathrooms; tram noise in street-facing rooms; temperature-dependent air conditioning

• Location: A short walk from Hauptbahnhof, with trams nearby and the old town within walking distance.

• Rooms: Simple, compact rooms; courtyard-facing options are available, but cooling draws complaints.

• Cleanliness: Generally well rated across sites, with occasional bathroom-cleaning lapses.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are one of the most consistent positives.

• Amenities: Free basic Wi-Fi, buffet breakfast, a 24-hour lobby bar and underground parking.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast, parking and pets cost extra; cooling is controlled partly by outside temperature.
