Wyndham hotels rated: 5.7/10 for how they treat paying guests

Our take: We'd book Wyndham selectively, not for dependable chain-wide quality.[1][Axel data] It suits travelers who find a well-reviewed hotel on a flexible rate, but cancellation terms and stay quality vary substantially.[2][Axel data]

Limited fees, but check the total

A resort-fee settlement approved in February 2020 required Wyndham to disclose fees on the Rooms and Rates page or earlier, visibly and separately from taxes, for at least two years.[3][4] U.S. rules now require covered lodging prices to include mandatory fees upfront; we could not confirm Wyndham-wide first-screen or app compliance.[5][6]

Axel's suppliers quoted 27,353 rates at 285 Wyndham hotels from September 26 to October 25, 2026, excluding the Philippines and Indonesia.[Axel data] Mandatory property fees appeared on 8% of those rates, typically $29 a night where charged; 6% of hotels had fees on most quoted rates. Treat those shares as a floor, since supplier quotes can omit fees.

Wyndham's FAQ says parking availability and charges vary by hotel.[2] For example, Wyndham Lake Buena Vista charges a $36 nightly resort fee plus $30 nightly self-parking, both before tax, while Super 8 Bowling Green South advertises free large-vehicle parking.[7][8]

Fees are not confined to resorts: Wyndham Garden Chinatown, for example, charges a $30 tax-inclusive daily facility fee.[9] At Wyndham Grand Clearwater Beach, another example, the corporate booking page says a $39.55 nightly resort fee is included in displayed cash rates.[6]

Flexibility depends on the booked rate

Wyndham publishes no universal paid-stay cancellation deadline: the hotel, rate and dates determine the policy.[2] Its FAQ says flexible rates are paid at check-in or checkout, although reservation-specific deposit terms still need checking.[2]

Among the same rates, 66% were refundable.[Axel data] Of those refundable rates, 43% allowed free cancellation less than 24 hours before check-in, 41% required 24 to 72 hours and 16% required at least 72 hours.

Pay Now & Save is nonrefundable, and cancellation or modification forfeits the entire reservation's room charges plus taxes.[10] Wyndham advertises savings of up to 15%, not a measured typical saving.[11] We'd choose a flexible rate if you want to cancel and rebook after a price drop, before its deadline.[2][12]

The Best Rate Guarantee matches an eligible competing rate and adds 3,000 points.[13] Claims are due within 24 hours of booking and at least 48 hours before check-in, with only one submission allowed per person and email address per calendar month.[14][15] The lower rate must remain bookable during review, screenshots do not count, and club-member rates and packages are excluded.[14][15] This is a narrow booking-time guarantee, not price-drop protection until arrival.[14]

Free membership, real third-party losses

Wyndham Rewards is free to join during booking, with member discounts of at least 5% off Standard Rate or 2% off promotional and hotel-special rates at participating properties.[16] The comparison excludes several offers, including nonrefundable rates and property-direct specials, so the member rate need not be the cheapest available.[16]

Every ordinary paid online travel agency booking loses Wyndham Rewards points, elite-night credit and contractual in-stay member benefits, regardless of the price paid.[17][18][19] Certain independent travel-agent bookings can qualify, but Wyndham says to confirm eligibility before booking.[17]

The separate Insider subscription costs $95 a year, renews automatically and advertises at least 10% savings at participating hotels.[20] Its rate is below the ordinary member rate for matching accommodation, not necessarily below every available offer.[20] Cardholders' enhanced member rate is not available through the app or traditional offline agents.[16]

Fixed tiers, weaker value and expiration

Since September 15, 2026, Wyndham Rewards has used four fixed award tiers: 5,000, 15,000, 30,000 and 45,000 points per bedroom per night, without dynamic or seasonal pricing.[21] Standard-room Free Nights have no blackout dates but remain subject to availability, minimum stays and arrival or departure restrictions.[18] At participating hotels, Free Nights include local taxes and resort or facility fees, but not incidentals.[18]

Outside legal and Premier-card exceptions, points expire four years after posting even with activity, and can be forfeited after approximately 18 inactive months.[18] Late checkout and Diamond suite upgrades depend on availability, and there is no chain-wide elite breakfast entitlement.[22][23]

Fixed tiers do not prevent price increases: Upgraded Points found that approximately 34% of 8,404 hotels increased in award price in September 2026, versus 22% that decreased.[24] Frequent Miler's October analysis estimated median redemption value at 0.57 US cents per point, down from 0.67 cents in its April analysis.[25]

Check holds and early-departure costs

Wyndham warns that checking out early can leave guests paying for originally booked nights.[2] ECHO Suites can instead reprice nights already stayed according to the shorter actual stay.[26] Wyndham also says cash acceptance varies by hotel and refunded deposits can take up to 30 days to appear, depending on bank processing.[2]

Deposit or card-hold warnings appear for 47% of the Wyndham hotels Axel has reviewed.[Axel data] Property examples show the range: Ramada State College requires a $25 incidental authorization even when paying cash, while Wyndham Grand Orlando Bonnet Creek authorizes $100 per night.[27][28] Bonnet Creek estimates release times of 14 to 21 days for international cards, with timing affected by the financial institution.[28]

La Quinta's published pet policy allows $25 per night, capped at $75 per room per stay, with authorized service animals exempt.[29] ECHO Suites includes cleaning and linen changes every 14 days, but charges for more frequent service and separately sells kitchen-equipment packs.[26] WaterWalk does not provide nightly housekeeping and permits a $25 charge for failing to discard trash before departure.[30]

The individual hotel matters most

Wyndham's annual report identifies franchisees' service quality and maintenance investment as factors affecting its business.[31] In October 2026, the 698 Wyndham hotels Axel has reviewed averaged 7.33 out of 10, judged against their class and price.[Axel data] Only 34% scored at least 8, while 31% scored below 7.

ACSI placed Wyndham last among reported hotel companies in April 2026, at 70 out of 100 against an industry benchmark of 77.[1] J.D. Power's 2026 results were mixed by brand, with strong economy and midscale performers alongside weaker upscale and upper-midscale results.[32][33][34][35]

TRYP is our clearest pick among hotels Axel has reviewed: 13 averaged 8.01, with none below 7.[Axel data] Microtel deserves a look for its four consecutive J.D. Power economy-segment wins, although its 14 reviewed hotels averaged 7.44 with 21% below 7.[36] Wingate finished second in J.D. Power's midscale segment, but 32% of its 34 reviewed hotels scored below 7.[34]

We'd be most cautious with Super 8: its 20 reviewed hotels averaged 6.38, with 75% below 7.[Axel data] La Quinta and Days Inn also need careful hotel-level checking: their reviewed averages were 7.19 and 7.05, with 35% and 33% below 7, respectively.

Which Wyndham brands to book

• La Quinta (Mixed): Free daily breakfast and a published $75-per-stay pet-fee cap are useful, but 35% of reviewed hotels scored below 7.[37][29][Axel data]
• Days Inn (Mixed): The reviewed average was 7.05, with one-third below 7.[Axel data] J.D. Power nevertheless placed it above the 2026 economy-segment average, so judge the specific hotel rather than dismissing the whole brand.[35][Axel data]
• Super 8 (Skip if you can): We'd skip it as a default choice: 75% of its 20 reviewed hotels scored below 7, and its 2026 J.D. Power result was below the economy average.[35][Axel data]
• Ramada (Mixed): Its reviewed average of 7.54 hides a 22% share below 7.[Axel data] J.D. Power placed it eighth of nine midscale brands in 2026.[34]

How to book Wyndham well

• Choose a flexible rate if your plans or the room price may change, because Pay Now & Save forfeits the entire room charge plus taxes on cancellation or modification.[2][10]
• Before you book through any online travel agency, count Wyndham points, elite-night credit and contractual in-stay member benefits as zero.[17][18][19]
• Choose a full-points Free Night rather than Points + Cash when fee inclusion matters, since Free Nights include resort fees while Clearwater Beach, for example, adds them to Points + Cash bookings.[18][6]
• Before you book with a debit card, ask the hotel for its incidental hold and release estimate, since deposit rules vary and funds can take time to return.[2][28]
• Choose La Quinta for a pet stay only after confirming acceptance and restrictions, although its published pet fee is capped at $75 per room per stay.[29]
• Skip ECHO Suites if you expect frequent included housekeeping or ready-equipped kitchens, because extra cleaning and kitchen packs cost more.[26]
