Axel's take: 8.7/10

A strong luxury choice for central Munich, with warm service and a newly refreshed spa. a historic five-star grand hotel on Munich’s luxury shopping boulevard, scored for what it is.

This historic five-star grand hotel on Maximilianstraße is a strong pick for travelers who want traditional luxury within walking distance of Munich’s old town. Booking.com, Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, comfortable beds, cleanliness and generous breakfast. The atmosphere is grand without consistently sounding stuffy, and the rooftop spa, reopened after a substantial renovation in May 2026, strengthens the case for lingering at the hotel.

The trade-offs are mostly about luxury-level expectations rather than broken basics. Recent guests occasionally report maintenance niggles or requests needing follow-up, although the overall feedback remains strongly positive. Breakfast, parking and hotel dining can add substantially to the bill; check what your booking includes. We’d choose it for attentive hospitality and location, but skip it if contemporary minimalist design or keeping extras modest matters more than grand-hotel character.

• Best for: couples seeking traditional luxury; shopping and old-town sightseeing; city breaks with spa time

• Watch out for: breakfast and parking may cost extra; occasional maintenance and follow-through lapses; costly hotel dining

• Location: On Maximilianstraße, with luxury shops, the opera and old-town sights close by.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and elegant rooms draw praise; isolated maintenance issues still surface.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com, Expedia and recent Tripadvisor feedback.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff are a major asset, with occasional missed requests.

• Amenities: Renovated rooftop spa with indoor pool, sauna and steam room, plus a gym, restaurants and bars.

• Fees and surprises: Check breakfast inclusion; parking, pet stays and airport transfers carry additional charges.
