Axel's take on Union Station & Downtown West: #3 of 6 in St. Louis, 6.1/10
A practical family-and-sports base, with quiet gaps between attractions. Useful transport and distinctive family attractions earn third place, while limited nearby dining and a smaller hotel selection hold it back.
The old rail terminal is now an attraction-led base: the aquarium, St. Louis Wheel and other family amusements sit around its train-shed setting. Market Street also puts you close to Energizer Park for soccer, with Enterprise Center and Stifel Theatre farther east; City Museum is a separate walk northeast.
Stay here when those outings drive the trip, especially with children or sports tickets. Outside event times, the broad streets and gaps between destinations make wandering less rewarding than the map suggests. Visitors describe quiet nights around Union Station but a very different atmosphere when soccer crowds arrive; check the calendar if you want an early night.
- Best for: families, sports fans
- Skip it if: You want continuous café-and-shop streets; You dislike event-night crowds
- Getting around: Union Station has Red/Blue Line trains; the aquarium, Wheel and soccer stadium are walkable. STL currently involves a North Hanley train change plus a shuttle for Terminal 1; BLV uses its airport shuttle and the Red Line. Airport arrangements checked October 15, 2026.
- After dark: Quiet around Union Station between events, then crowded with supporters on soccer nights; some connecting blocks feel deserted.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $183 a night
