Central West End & Forest Park
sidewalk dining · independent bookshops · historic residences · park-edge living · medical campus
7.0/10
The best all-round base for neighborhood meals, museums and park days.
The strongest character score, good hotels and useful transport put it first, despite weaker value and fewer attractions immediately on the doorstep.

Euclid Avenue and Maryland Plaza give you the city's most convincing all-round visitor neighborhood: cafés, restaurants, independent shops and handsome residential streets beside Forest Park. The Cathedral Basilica is nearby on Lindell Boulevard, and the medical campus brings everyday activity rather than a purely tourist crowd.
Locals repeatedly steer car-free visitors here, and that feels right for a first visit with meals and museums in the mix. The qualification is scale: the zoo and art museum are deep inside Forest Park, not immediately outside every door, and the rail station sits south of the main dining blocks. Skip it if walking straight to a downtown game or convention is your priority.

- Skip it if
- You need to walk to downtown events; You expect every Forest Park attraction on the doorstep
- Getting around
- Walk Euclid and Maryland Plaza; Central West End station has Red/Blue Line trains beside the medical campus. STL currently needs a North Hanley train change and Terminal 1 shuttle; BLV needs its shuttle plus the Red Line. Airport arrangements checked October 15, 2026.
- After dark
- Euclid's restaurants and bars support an evening stroll; the neighborhood remains quieter away from those dining blocks.
