Axel's take on Grand Center & Midtown: #4 of 6 in St. Louis, 6.0/10
Stay for theater and jazz; accept less convenient everyday exploring. The highest access score and a concentrated arts scene help, but limited hotel choice and performance-led street life keep it fourth.
North Grand Boulevard and Washington Avenue are for theater, jazz and gallery-going: the Fabulous Fox, Powell Hall, Jazz St. Louis, the Pulitzer and Contemporary Art Museum cluster here. Powell Hall reopened in September 2025 after its expansion, restoring a major reason to stay within walking distance of performances.
This is a strong specialist base, not my default for a first visit. Restaurants and cocktail spots support an evening out, but much of the appeal follows performance schedules, and Grand MetroLink station is a substantial walk south. Choose it for several arts events; skip it if you want effortless airport rail or a compact, continuously busy shopping-and-dining neighborhood.
- Best for: museums and culture, nightlife
- Skip it if: You want rail immediately outside; Your trip is mainly downtown sightseeing
- Getting around: Walk between arts venues; the 70 Grand bus connects to Grand's Red/Blue Line station, roughly a 15–20-minute walk south. From STL use Red Line plus current airport transfers, then bus or rideshare; from BLV use its shuttle, Red Line and local connection. Checked October 15, 2026.
- After dark: Theater crowds, jazz and artist lounges animate show nights; expect quieter connecting blocks after audiences disperse.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $178 a night
