Axel's take on San José del Cabo Historic Center: #2 of 8 in Los Cabos, 7.0/10
Choose San José’s historic streets for galleries, good dinners and slower evenings. Historic character, excellent value and accessible galleries earn second place, but hotel choice and doorstep dining are more limited than in downtown Cabo.
Plaza Mijares, the mission church and the galleries around Álvaro Obregón give historic San José a clear advantage for travelers who enjoy a town on foot. Days can move between courtyards, cafés and galleries without a transport plan. Thursday Art Walk evenings, traditionally November through June, give the district an especially sociable rhythm.
This is a town stay, not a beach holiday with incidental culture. Swimming beaches require an outing, and the farm restaurants beyond the estuary are not extensions of the walking district. Stay here for food, art and unhurried evenings; choose Médano if daily sea swimming and Cabo San Lucas boat trips are the main event.
- Best for: food lovers, museums and culture, couples, travelers on a budget
- Skip it if: You want beachfront accommodation; Most activities depart from Cabo San Lucas
- Getting around: Walk Plaza Mijares and the Gallery District; Ruta del Desierto serves Centro San José on its SJD–Cabo route, with taxis useful for luggage, beaches and farm restaurants.
- After dark: Dinner streets stay sociable, especially on seasonal Thursday Art Walk nights; expect galleries and conversation rather than Cabo’s club scene.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $94 a night · usually 12% under the public rate

How to choose
- Choose Tropicana Los Cabos, Tapestry Collection by Hilton if you want renovated boutique rooms, a heated pool and gallery evenings on foot.
- Choose Hotel Colli if you want a cheaper historic-center base and can request a room away from street noise.
What paying more buys
Hotel Colli gives you the central walking location and consistently praised cleanliness for less than most here. Tropicana Los Cabos costs considerably more for renovated rooms, a heated pool, hot tub and wellness treatments. The upgrade is less worthwhile if galleries and restaurants will keep you out most of the day. Typical rates with Axel here run from $83 a night at Hotel Colli to $211 at Tropicana Los Cabos, Tapestry Collection by Hilton (last 30 days).
