Axel's take: 8.8/10

A strong downtown pick for character, cleanliness and walkable evenings, rather than beach days. a renovated 4-star boutique hotel in historic downtown San José del Cabo, scored for what it is.

Tropicana is a renovated 4-star boutique hotel for travelers who want San José del Cabo outside their front door. We'd pick it for galleries, restaurants and evenings around Plaza Mijares, not a beachfront resort holiday. The 2024 overhaul brought refreshed rooms and a welcoming courtyard pool. Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the cleanliness, comfortable beds and friendly staff, making this a strong choice for a town-focused stay.

The trade-offs are mostly about expectations and room selection. Some guests report street or overhead noise, so light sleepers should request a quieter upper-floor room. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests also describe a skimpy included continental breakfast; confirm exactly what your booking or Hilton benefits cover. We'd skip it if direct beach access or resort-scale facilities are essential.

• Best for: couples exploring the historic center; Art Walk and restaurant-focused stays; travelers preferring boutique hotels to big resorts

• Watch out for: Not beachfront; Noise varies by room; Included continental breakfast can be minimal

• Location: Near Plaza Mijares and the Art District, with restaurants and galleries easily walkable.

• Rooms: Renovated rooms earn comfort praise; some guests mention noise or windows facing passageways.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent guest reviews, with particularly strong Expedia ratings.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff receive widespread praise, though occasional service and loyalty-benefit frustrations appear.

• Amenities: Heated outdoor pool, hot tub, two restaurants and wellness treatments; not a full-scale beach resort.

• Fees and surprises: Hilton lists complimentary parking, daily pet charges and no airport shuttle; check breakfast inclusions.
