Axel's take on New Cumberland: #6 of 8 in Harrisburg, 3.9/10
A pleasant small-town outing, but check how far your stay is from it. New Cumberland offers decent value and small-town personality, but weaker hotels and the separation between lodging and Bridge Street undermine convenience.
New Cumberland offers two different visitor experiences: a small-town evening around Bridge Street and the West Shore Theatre, and a practical overnight stop around Limekiln Road and the interstate junction. Independent food stops and community events, including Pride, give the town more personality than the exit ramps suggest.
This works for couples who like a low-key dinner or show and travelers continuing along I-83 or the Turnpike. Do not confuse a New Cumberland address with a walkable town-center stay: lodging near the junction is separate from Bridge Street. Weekday-only buses make a car-free weekend awkward.
- Best for: couples, LGBTQ+ travelers
- Skip it if: You need useful weekend public transport; You expect Bridge Street outside every lodging address
- Getting around: Weekday Route A connects New Cumberland and Fairview Plaza with downtown; local walking depends on the address; MDT is simplest by car, or 7 plus A via downtown.
- After dark: Residents describe a generally subdued town, with livelier pockets around pubs, theater shows and community events.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $87 a night · usually 7% under the public rate

Where to look in New Cumberland
How to choose
- Choose Holiday Inn Express & Suites New Cumberland by IHG if you want spacious rooms, included breakfast and an indoor pool for a family highway stop.
- Choose Highland Inn New Cumberland if keeping the rate down matters most and you'll arrive before 11 p.m.; room condition varies.
- Choose Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Harrisburg West if a whirlpool alongside the indoor pool matters enough to pay more; don't count on it being hot.
What paying more buys
Holiday Inn Express adds included breakfast, an indoor pool and often-spacious rooms over cheaper Highland Inn. Fairfield costs still more and adds a whirlpool, but temperature complaints, highway noise and uneven cleaning limit its appeal. Overnight drivers who won't swim have little reason to pay the pool premium. Typical rates with Axel here run from $63 a night at Highland Inn New Cumberland to $129 at Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Harrisburg West (last 30 days).
