Axel's take on Fort Myers Beach: #6 of 8 in Fort Myers, 5.2/10
The beach-first choice, with rebuilding still part of the experience. Strong hotels and beach-town character cannot fully offset poor value, limited mainland access and ongoing rebuilding.
Stay near Estero Boulevard, Times Square and Old San Carlos Boulevard when sand, sunsets and casual dinners are the point of the trip. The north-end streets let you combine beach time, shops and live music without driving between every activity. A March 2026 visitor discussion confirms that this remains a workable walking holiday.
Do not mistake reopening for completed recovery. The pier rebuild remains a project rather than an attraction you can walk onto, temporary businesses persist around Times Square, and Lynn Hall's beach is open while its parking lot is closed for restoration. Choose it for beach days; skip it for frequent mainland sightseeing or an entirely construction-free setting.
- Best for: families, couples, luxury travelers, travelers without a car
- Skip it if: You want a completely rebuilt beach town; You need frequent mainland trips
- Getting around: Walk the north-end dining streets; routes 410 and 490 provide beach service. RSW: 50 to Beach Park & Ride, then 490 and, if needed, 410; PGD: road transfer.
- After dark: Times Square and nearby waterfront venues offer live music; evenings are more social near the north-end dining streets.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $290 a night · usually 8% under the public rate

How to choose
- Choose Best Western Plus Beach Resort if you want direct beachfront, kitchenettes and included breakfast without full-service resort extras.
- Choose Matanzas Inn Bayside Resort and Marina if you prefer a cheaper bayside base with marina facilities and a short walk to the beach.
- Choose Margaritaville Beach Resort Fort Myers if you want a spa, several dining venues and an active beach-club pool rather than quiet.
What paying more buys
Cheaper Matanzas Inn trades direct beachfront for a short walk from the bay. Best Western Plus Beach Resort adds sand outside, renovated kitchenettes and included breakfast; pricier DiamondHead adds one-bedroom suites, balconies and two hot tubs. The beachfront premium is less worthwhile if you enjoy marina surroundings and do not mind walking to the sand. Typical rates with Axel here run from $173 a night at The Lighthouse Resort Inn & Suites to $395 at Harbour House At The Inn (last 30 days).
