Axel's take: 8.8/10

A strong bayside pick for clean rooms, friendly service and leaving the car parked. a casual 3-star bayside motel with a marina, scored for what it is.

Matanzas Inn is a casual 3-star bayside motel and marina, not a full-service beach resort. It's a strong pick for travelers who want clean, comfortable accommodation within walking distance of the sand, restaurants and Times Square. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise helpful staff and cleanliness. Rooms range from straightforward doubles to cottages and kitchen-equipped suites; the pool, hot tub and waterfront dining give this small property more appeal than a basic motel.

The trade-offs are practical: you're on the bay, not the beach, and room layouts and sizes vary considerably. The hotel lists a daily resort fee, housekeeping is on request, and there's no elevator. Accessibility is limited, so confirm the exact room before booking. We'd skip it for a polished, full-service resort stay, but shortlist it for an easygoing beach break or a visit by boat.

• Best for: couples wanting a walkable beach break; boaters needing overnight accommodation; travelers seeking kitchen-equipped rooms

• Watch out for: daily resort fee; bayside, not beachfront; no elevator and limited accessibility

• Location: Bayside in Fort Myers Beach, with the beach, Times Square and restaurants a short walk away.

• Rooms: Motel rooms, studios, suites and cottages; all have refrigerators and microwaves, while many have full kitchens.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength in recent guest feedback, including praise for rooms, grounds and the pool.

• Service: Friendly, accommodating office staff receive repeated praise; daily housekeeping is available on request.

• Amenities: Outdoor pool, hot tub, marina and waterfront dining; selected pet-friendly rooms require direct confirmation.

• Fees and surprises: Daily resort fee; one parking space included per room; lead renter must be at least 25.
