Retiro & Plaza San Martín
plaza walks · grand residences · cocktail addresses · transport connections
7.8/10
A connected, elegant alternative to downtown, especially around the plaza and Arroyo.
Retiro leads through character, useful connections and balanced hotel value, though its office streets lack the consistent evening appeal of Plaza San Martín and Arroyo.

Retiro works best when you think of Plaza San Martín and Arroyo, not simply the transport terminal. The plaza, Kavanagh building, grand former residences, and Florida shopping street give you plenty to explore. Arroyo adds cafés and destination cocktails, making this a more appealing evening base than an office-only reading of Retiro suggests.
The trade-off is that the neighborhood changes noticeably between its intimate streets, office avenues, and station approaches. Pick an address deliberately rather than treating them as interchangeable. This is a strong choice for business, shopping, and mixed itineraries; travelers wanting a uniformly residential atmosphere should choose Recoleta instead.
- Best for
- business trips and conventionsshopping
- Skip it if
- You want a consistently residential atmosphere; You are choosing solely for proximity to the terminal
- Getting around
- C at San Martín, E at Catalinas/Retiro, and Retiro trains provide connections; Florida and Recoleta are walkable. EZE coaches reach Pellegrini 971; taxis/transfers serve EZE and AEP.
- After dark
- Arroyo has an evening dining-and-cocktail scene; do not expect every surrounding office street to share that atmosphere.
- Where to look
- Plaza San Martín. Start here for leafy sightseeing walks and convenient transport; the station-facing edge feels busier.Arroyo near Suipacha. Choose these intimate, architectural streets for café stops and evenings closer to Recoleta.Suipacha near Santa Fe. A practical compromise between plaza walks, downtown shopping and theater outings, rather than a residential retreat.
