San Telmo gives you a stronger sense of old Buenos Aires than the northern restaurant districts. Defensa links antiques shops, old mansions, the market, and Plaza Dorrego; the Museo Moderno adds a substantial cultural stop. Sunday brings the famous street fair, but the neighborhood also rewards slower weekday wandering through its cafés and galleries.

- travelers on a budgetmuseums and culture
- Skip it if
- You want a Subte station beside your accommodation; You dislike quiet side streets after dinner
- Getting around
- Walk west to Independencia C/E or San Juan C; buses use Paseo Colón, and Defensa leads toward Plaza de Mayo. EZE/AEP arrivals are simplest by taxi or transfer.
- After dark
- Defensa's dining pockets retain activity, but recent reports describe empty side streets; take a car when your return would involve an isolated walk.
- Where to look
- Defensa near Plaza Dorrego. Choose the antiques-and-market core for historic wandering and restaurant stops; Sunday brings a much busier atmosphere.Chacabuco near Independencia. A compromise between market streets and western transport links; evening activity varies considerably from block to block.Independencia station. Favor the western edge when subway journeys matter more than stepping straight into Defensa's antique-shop atmosphere.
