Axel's take on Gangnam: #6 of 8 in Seoul, 6.6/10
Book Gangnam when your plans are south of the river. Strong hotels, abundant dining and reasonable value suit southern-Seoul plans, but weak sightseeing access and less distinctive streets hold it back.
This is the working, neon-lit Gangnam around Gangnam Station and Yeoksam, not the designer streets of Cheongdam. Expect broad avenues, office workers, underground shopping and restaurant-and-bar lanes behind Gangnam-daero. It works well when meetings, appointments or evening plans are concentrated south of the river.
Do not book it simply because the name is familiar. Useful subway lines do not make palace sightseeing a short outing, and large intersections interrupt the pleasure of wandering. COEX is another train ride, not your doorstep. Choose Gangnam for business and polished city conveniences; choose Jongno or Myeongdong for a more straightforward sightseeing base.
- Best for: luxury travelers, business trips and conventions
- Skip it if: Most days involve historical Seoul; You want small-scale streets and leisurely wandering
- Getting around: Line 2 at Gangnam/Yeoksam, Shinbundang at Gangnam and Line 9 at Sinnonhyeon; dining lanes are walkable; GMP is direct from Sinnonhyeon, while ICN requires changing from AREX at GMP.
- After dark: Restaurant and bar streets around Gangnam Station remain busy after office hours; this is not a quiet business district once the working day ends.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $238 a night
