Where to stay in Seoul: the 8 best neighborhoods, ranked

Updated October 15, 2026 · Ranked by Axel from research, its own hotel reviews and recent rates · How we rank

Stay in Insadong & Jongno for a first visit or a family sightseeing trip: palace walks, teahouses and strong hotels make it Seoul’s best all-round base. Myeongdong is the runner-up for shopping-led convenience. Choose Hongdae & Sinchon for nightlife and the strongest hotel value, or Itaewon & Hannam when restaurants, galleries and LGBTQ+ nightlife shape your plans.

Think of Seoul as several different bases rather than one compact sightseeing district: Axel ranks each neighborhood by how easily you can reach major sights and airport trains, what is within a short walk, the strength of its reviewed hotels, hotel quality for the money and the character of the streets themselves.

    Insadong & Jongno

traditional teahouses · hanok café lanes · craft galleries · local drinking streets · palace walks

    8.6/10

Stay here for old Seoul without giving up useful transport.

The strongest hotels and historical character put it first, with abundant doorstep choices and useful transport; value is respectable rather than exceptional.

Stay here if you want Seoul's history woven into ordinary walks. Insadong-gil has teahouses, craft shops and galleries; nearby Ikseon-dong adds cafés and restaurants in narrow hanok lanes. The palaces, Bukchon and Jongmyo make this a particularly satisfying base for travelers interested in architecture and Korean culture.

Do not mistake the whole neighborhood for a quiet retreat. Jongno 3-ga has busy drinking lanes and a longstanding local gay-bar scene, while the Insadong and Anguk side better suits earlier nights. Choose your street carefully: the appeal is having both moods nearby, not expecting silence everywhere.

    Myeongdong

cosmetics shopping · department stores · evening food stalls · international visitors

    8.2/10

Choose Myeongdong for an easy first trip, not neighborhood atmosphere.

Excellent doorstep convenience, strong hotels and useful subway choices earn second place, but weaker value and tourist-focused streets keep it behind Jongno.

Myeongdong makes a short Seoul stay straightforward: cosmetics shops on Myeongdong-gil, department stores along Namdaemun-ro and an evening street-food circuit. Namdaemun Market and Cheonggyecheon are walkable, while subway stations on different sides give you useful route choices. Recent visitor threads repeatedly recommend it for first trips.

The compromise is atmosphere. Visitors also describe dense crowds and a neighborhood geared heavily toward tourists rather than everyday Seoul. Stay here if convenience and shopping matter more than independent cafés or late-night bars; choose Jongno for more historical character or Hongdae for evenings that continue after shopping finishes.

Strong transport, plentiful doorstep options and solid hotels outweigh limited street charm; value is middling rather than a standout.

Dongdaemun is a working fashion district rather than a polished shopping quarter. Around Jangchungdan-ro, malls and market buildings sit beside the sculptural Dongdaemun Design Plaza. Cheonggyecheon and Gwangjang Market give you alternatives to shopping, and the several subway lines make this a practical place to sleep between outings.

The trade-offs are broad roads, commercial blocks and shopping that can be confusing for casual browsers. Some market buildings concentrate on wholesale buyers, so late opening does not automatically mean easy tourist shopping. Stay here for transport and functional surroundings; skip it if you want intimate streets immediately outside.

Hongdae suits travelers who want something happening after dinner: performance streets, shops, bars and a young university crowd. Yeonnam-dong adds cafés and walks along Gyeongui Line Forest Park, while Sinchon's Yonsei-ro offers another student-oriented dining area. This is a good place to return to without planning a separate evening excursion.

The catch is noise around the club streets and a less convenient position for palace-heavy days. Visitors who enjoy bars often love staying here; early sleepers should avoid rooms facing nightlife lanes. Also distinguish Hongik University from Sinchon: both have Line 2, but only Hongik has the airport train.

These are two different moods along Itaewon-ro. Itaewon brings international restaurants, bars and LGBTQ nightlife around Usadan-ro 12-gil; Hannam leans toward boutiques, cafés and art around Leeum. Couples who prefer galleries and dinner to shopping crowds can make a particularly good stay on the Hannam side.

The compromise is practical rather than cultural: Line 6 often means changing trains for major sightseeing, and side streets can climb steeply. A resident answering visitors specifically warns that the uphill walk becomes tiring after full days out. Stay close to Itaewon or Hangangjin station, and skip hillside addresses if easy walking is essential.

    Gangnam

This is the working, neon-lit Gangnam around Gangnam Station and Yeoksam, not the designer streets of Cheongdam. Expect broad avenues, office workers, underground shopping and restaurant-and-bar lanes behind Gangnam-daero. It works well when meetings, appointments or evening plans are concentrated south of the river.

Do not book it simply because the name is familiar. Useful subway lines do not make palace sightseeing a short outing, and large intersections interrupt the pleasure of wandering. COEX is another train ride, not your doorstep. Choose Gangnam for business and polished city conveniences; choose Jongno or Myeongdong for a more straightforward sightseeing base.

Good hotels and useful convention facilities cannot fully offset weak sightseeing access, middling value and a commercial setting complicated by construction.

COEX makes a particular kind of trip easy: conventions, indoor shopping, Starfield Library and Bongeunsa Temple are close together. Samseong and Bongeunsa stations serve opposite sides, and the sports complex is a short Line 9 ride away. Choose it for organized, weather-resistant days rather than intimate street life.

The compromise is a large commercial environment and repeated journeys to historical Seoul. Yeongdong-daero's underground development remains an active consideration in 2026: official plans cover the stretch between Samseong and Bongeunsa, and recent visitors notice the surrounding construction. Check the actual approach to your accommodation rather than assuming future pedestrian and rail connections already exist.

Jamsil works best when Lotte World is a main event rather than a day trip. The theme park, tower and shopping complex combine with Seokchon Lake's walking paths to make family days straightforward. The lake also gives couples somewhere to stroll without organizing another cross-city outing.

The drawback is committing your base to eastern Seoul when many sightseeing days lead elsewhere. Large shopping complexes and station passages can also make short errands less simple than they look. Sports venues require a short train ride; baseball fans should note the planned move to nearby Olympic Stadium for 2027–2031 while the replacement dome is built.

How Axel ranks neighborhoods

Axel ranks each neighborhood as a base for a visitor, not as a place to visit. Five scores out of 10 are blended into the score beside each name. The pages for each kind of trip weight how well a neighborhood fits that trip more heavily.

  • Getting around (20%): How many of the city’s most-visited sights are within easy reach, plus a direct train to the airport.
  • On your doorstep (15%): Places to eat, drink and see within a 10-minute walk, counted from OpenStreetMap.
  • Hotels (20%): Axel’s own reviews of the hotels here, and how many good ones there are to choose from.
  • Value (10%): Hotel quality for the money, from the rates Axel saw in the last 30 days, against the city as a whole.
  • Axel’s verdict (35%): How good a base it is for a visitor, from research into guides, forums, transit and local news.

Questions travelers ask

Is Insadong or Myeongdong better for a first trip to Seoul?

Insadong & Jongno ranks first, with Myeongdong second. Choose Jongno for palace walks, teahouses, craft galleries and a stronger sense of historical Seoul. Choose Myeongdong if cosmetics shopping, department stores and straightforward visitor conveniences matter more. Both have useful subway choices; Myeongdong’s compromises are shopping crowds and weaker hotel value, while Jongno requires care around late-night drinking streets.

Where should families stay in Seoul: Jongno or near Lotte World?

Insadong & Jongno is the better family base for a broad Seoul trip, with Myeongdong the runner-up. Its combination of historical outings, nearby dining and strong hotels outweighs Jamsil’s specialized appeal. Stay near Lotte World when the theme park is a main event, not merely one day out. Jamsil also offers Seokchon Lake walks, but ranks much lower for sightseeing access and value.

What is the cheapest good area to stay in Seoul?

Hongdae & Sinchon is the strongest budget choice among these ranked areas, with the best value pillar, good reviewed hotels and typical rates below Seoul’s median. Dongdaemun comes second for budget travelers and offers more useful sightseeing connections. In Hongdae, favor an address away from club streets if sleep matters, and choose near Hongik University rather than Sinchon for direct airport trains.

Where should I stay in Seoul without a car, coming from the airports?

Myeongdong ranks first without a car, followed by Insadong & Jongno and Dongdaemun, because useful subway lines combine with plenty to do on foot. For the simplest airport rail journey, Hongik University has direct all-stop AREX trains from both Incheon and Gimpo. Myeongdong requires a change at Seoul Station; Jongno and Dongdaemun have direct Line 5 service from Gimpo.

Is Hongdae a good base for a first visit, or just for nightlife?

Hongdae is a good base if lively evenings, hotel value and direct airport rail matter more than short journeys to the palaces. It ranks first for nightlife and budget trips, but fourth for first-time visitors behind Jongno, Myeongdong and Dongdaemun. Visitors report entertainment continuing into the early hours, so avoid club-facing rooms if you need reliable early nights.

Should I stay at COEX for a convention or choose central Seoul?

Stay in COEX & Samseong when convention attendance defines your schedule; the venue, indoor shopping and Bongeunsa are close together. For business travel overall, Myeongdong ranks first and Insadong & Jongno second because they balance hotels with broader city access. COEX’s surrounding construction is a practical caveat: check the actual approach to your accommodation rather than assuming planned connections are already open.

Is Gangnam a convenient base for Seoul’s palaces and old neighborhoods?

No—choose Insadong & Jongno or Myeongdong for a trip centered on palaces and historical Seoul. Gangnam works better when meetings, appointments or evening plans concentrate south of the river. This ranked area covers Gangnam Station and Yeoksam, not Cheongdam’s designer streets. COEX is another train ride rather than a doorstep attraction, so the familiar Gangnam name should not decide your base.
