Axel's take on Itaewon & Hannam: #5 of 8 in Seoul, 6.7/10
Stay for restaurants, art and nightlife; check the hill before booking. Restaurants, art and nightlife give it strong doorstep appeal, but weaker hotels and value, hills and train changes limit its all-round usefulness.
These are two different moods along Itaewon-ro. Itaewon brings international restaurants, bars and LGBTQ nightlife around Usadan-ro 12-gil; Hannam leans toward boutiques, cafés and art around Leeum. Couples who prefer galleries and dinner to shopping crowds can make a particularly good stay on the Hannam side.
The compromise is practical rather than cultural: Line 6 often means changing trains for major sightseeing, and side streets can climb steeply. A resident answering visitors specifically warns that the uphill walk becomes tiring after full days out. Stay close to Itaewon or Hangangjin station, and skip hillside addresses if easy walking is essential.
- Best for: couples, nightlife, food lovers, LGBTQ+ travelers
- Skip it if: You need consistently level walking; You want sightseeing with minimal train changes
- Getting around: Line 6 at Itaewon and Hangangjin; restaurants, shops and Leeum are walkable, with hills; from ICN or GMP, take all-stop AREX to Gongdeok and change to Line 6.
- After dark: Recent visitors describe packed weekend nightlife in Itaewon; favor the Hannam art-and-dining streets if clubs are not your reason for staying.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $303 a night
