Dongdaemun is a working fashion district rather than a polished shopping quarter. Around Jangchungdan-ro, malls and market buildings sit beside the sculptural Dongdaemun Design Plaza. Cheonggyecheon and Gwangjang Market give you alternatives to shopping, and the several subway lines make this a practical place to sleep between outings.

The trade-offs are broad roads, commercial blocks and shopping that can be confusing for casual browsers.
