Axel's take on Avenida Balboa & the Banking District: #3 of 6 in Panama City, 6.9/10
A practical modern base, with the waterfront as your daily escape. Avenida Balboa combines good hotels, waterfront recreation and central convenience, but traffic, variable Metro walks and middling value keep it behind El Cangrejo.
Choose Avenida Balboa for mornings on the Cinta Costera, then head inland for the banking district's restaurants and business addresses. Parque Urracá offers a useful green break, while Calle Uruguay provides an evening alternative to Casco. This is a strong compromise if your trip mixes sightseeing, work and waterfront exercise.
The catch is that a skyline view does not guarantee pleasant walking in every direction. Balboa carries substantial traffic, and reaching the promenade or Metro can involve crossings and an inland walk. Pick an address for the journeys you will actually make. Skip it if you want old-town atmosphere or consistently quiet streets.
- Best for: first-time visitors, business trips and conventions, travelers without a car, sports fans
- Skip it if: You want colonial character; Traffic noise bothers you
- Getting around: Walk the Cinta Costera; Line 1 at Iglesia del Carmen or Santo Tomás is inland, with the walk depending on your address. PTY is reached by car or Line 1, Line 2 and the airport branch with two changes; use taxis from PAC or BLB.
- After dark: Expect evening activity around Calle Uruguay rather than throughout the banking district; choose the street, not just the skyline view.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $143 a night · usually 5% under the public rate

Where to look in Avenida Balboa & the Banking District
- Parque Urracá waterfront edge. Choose the park edge for shade and waterfront exercise, accepting the avenue between neighborhood streets and the promenade. Hotels here: Posada 1914, InterContinental Miramar Panama by IHG.
- Calle Uruguay. Start here if nearby dinners and evening venues matter more than a consistently quiet street. Hotels here: Waldorf Astoria Panama.
- Avenida Balboa at Calle 53. The eastern waterfront suits promenade outings and skyline watching, but traffic makes the precise crossing matter. Hotels here: Plaza Paitilla Inn Hotel, Las Americas Golden Tower Panama, Hospedium Princess Hotel Panama.
How to choose
- Choose Bristol Panama, a Registry Collection Hotel if you prioritize attentive service and spacious rooms over a large pool or contemporary furnishings.
- Choose Plaza Paitilla Inn Hotel if you want spacious rooms and bay-view value; book the view explicitly and accept awkward surrounding roads.
- Choose Posada 1914 if you want a low-cost social base with a shared kitchen, and accept hostel comforts and possible shared bathrooms.
What paying more buys
Posada 1914 is cheaper than most here, but hostel basics and bathroom arrangements require flexibility. Bristol Panama buys spacious rooms, attentive service and a spa; pricier W Panama adds bold design and stronger leisure facilities, not guaranteed quiet. Neither premium makes much sense if you mainly need a bed between city outings. Typical rates with Axel here run from $48 a night at Posada 1914 to $347 at Waldorf Astoria Panama (last 30 days).
