Axel's take: 7.7/10

A practical central base with generous space, but uneven upkeep. An older full-service 4-star city hotel with a large outdoor pool, scored for what it is.

El Panama is an older, full-service 4-star whose strongest selling points are space and convenience rather than polished luxury. Its central location near Iglesia del Carmen metro makes getting around straightforward, while the large outdoor pool gives it more leisure appeal than many business hotels. Booking.com and Expedia guests regularly praise the breakfast, helpful staff and roomy accommodation. It's a good pick for travelers who prioritize those basics over contemporary interiors.

The trade-off is inconsistent condition. Recent Expedia and Trip.com reviews describe tired bathrooms and occasional air-conditioning problems; some guests receive upgraded rooms, while others find accommodation needing attention. Pool maintenance also draws mixed feedback despite plenty of positive reports. We'd ask for an updated room and skip it if reliably modern finishes or a serious gym are priorities.

• Best for: City explorers using the metro; Families wanting room space and a pool; Travelers comfortable with an older hotel

• Watch out for: Uneven room and bathroom condition; Occasional air-conditioning complaints; Mixed pool-maintenance feedback

• Location: Central Vía España setting, about two minutes' walk from Iglesia del Carmen metro, with shops and restaurants nearby.

• Rooms: Generally spacious; updated rooms exist, but dated bathrooms and inconsistent air-conditioning remain reported drawbacks.

• Cleanliness: Mostly positive overall, though occasional room-odor and housekeeping complaints prevent a stronger endorsement.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a recurring strength across Booking.com, Expedia and Trip.com feedback.

• Amenities: Outdoor and children's pools, restaurants and a casino; recent feedback suggests the gym is basic.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia lists free parking; airport transfers, pets and early or late departures carry extra charges.
