Axel's take on Schwabing: #7 of 9 in Munich, 6.2/10
Choose park life and lively evenings over Old Town immediacy. Character and solid hotels appeal, but the immediate choice of sights and eating places is thinner, and central access depends heavily on your address.
Stay here for the English Garden, café terraces and a neighborhood with its own evening plans. Around Münchner Freiheit, Feilitzschstrasse and Hohenzollernstrasse, restaurants and shops make it easy to spend time locally. Leopoldstrasse is the busy spine, while the side streets offer a gentler version of Schwabing's long-standing café culture.
The important distinction is between an address near those streets and one farther north that needs an extra journey. Check the walk to U-Bahn rather than booking on the Schwabing name alone. This is a strong choice for park-minded families and travelers combining evenings out with football, but less compelling for a brief, sightseeing-only first visit.
- Best for: families, nightlife, shopping, sports fans
- Skip it if: You want Old Town sightseeing entirely on foot; Your address is a long walk from U-Bahn
- Getting around: U3/U6 serve Münchner Freiheit, with tram 23 continuing north; walk to the English Garden. MUC requires an S-Bahn/U-Bahn change, or an airport coach to Nordfriedhof followed by U6; FMM connects through Hauptbahnhof by coach.
- After dark: Expect busy restaurant and bar streets around Münchner Freiheit and Feilitzschstrasse; Leopoldstrasse also carries traffic and occasional football celebrations.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $146 a night · usually 6% under the public rate

Where to look in Schwabing
- Münchner Freiheit. Start here for classic Schwabing evenings, café terraces and shopping; this is the lively neighborhood core, not the northern business district.
- Schwabinger Tor. Choose this newer quarter for pedestrian spaces and cafés, accepting a tram journey toward the older neighborhood’s busiest streets. Hotels here: Andaz Munich Schwabinger Tor, By Hyatt.
- Nordfriedhof U-Bahn. Favor this northern transport anchor when easy onward journeys matter more than having the Old Town on your doorstep. Hotels here: Steigenberger Hotel München, Munich Marriott Hotel, Pullman Munich, INNSiDE by Meliá München Parkstadt Schwabing.
How to choose
- Choose Andaz Munich Schwabinger Tor, By Hyatt if spacious rooms and extensive spa time justify one of the pricier stays here.
- Choose Pullman Munich if you want roomy accommodation near the U-Bahn and airport bus without paying for top-end luxury.
- Choose Star G Hotel Premium München Domagkstraße if your family wants two queen beds at a cheaper rate and can accept limited bathroom privacy.
