8.1/10
Soldier Field access, useful rail connections and comparatively solid value put it first overall; evenings away from events are quiet.

The South Loop covers the stretch south of Congress Parkway: the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium on the Museum Campus, Grant Park, Soldier Field, McCormick Place, Printer's Row and, at its southern edge, Chinatown. Blues and jazz rooms keep a few corners lively, and the Orange Line at Roosevelt runs straight to Midway.
- Best for
- familiesbusiness trips and conventionssports fansmuseums and culture
- Skip it if
- you want nightlife on your doorstep; you dislike long walks between blocks
- Getting around
- Red Line at Harrison, Roosevelt and Cermak-Chinatown; Green and Orange at Roosevelt; Metra Electric for McCormick Place. The Orange Line runs direct to Midway in about 20 minutes; for O'Hare, catch the Blue Line at Jackson or LaSalle, a short walk north.
- After dark
- Quiet in the evening apart from a few blues and jazz clubs and Chinatown; stretches near McCormick Place feel empty after dark, so plan a ride for late returns.
- Where to look
- Michigan Avenue along Grant Park. Start on the park-facing stretch for museum and lakefront days; good for visitors who favor open space over nightlife.Dearborn Street in Printer's Row. Choose the historic blocks for a more intimate streetscape near the Loop, rather than the large convention-hotel setting farther south.Cermak Road at McCormick Place. Stay here for convention and arena convenience, not a sightseeing-centered trip; the surrounding blocks are spread out.
