The Loop is downtown proper, ringed by the elevated tracks that give it its name. Millennium Park, the Art Institute, the Riverwalk, the architecture boat docks and the theater district around State and Randolph are all on foot, and every L line meets here, including the Blue Line to O'Hare and the Orange Line to Midway.
- Best for
- first-time visitorsbusiness trips and conventionstravelers without a carmuseums and culture
- Skip it if
- you want lively streets on weeknights; you want a lived-in neighborhood feel
- Getting around
- Every L line plus Metra at Union, Ogilvie, Millennium and LaSalle stations; State/Lake is closed for rebuilding until 2029, so use Clark/Lake or Washington/Wabash. Blue Line to O'Hare in about 40-45 minutes, Orange Line to Midway in about 25.
- After dark
- Busy around the theaters and the Riverwalk in the evening and on weekends, but many office blocks go quiet after about 7pm on weeknights.
