Axel's take on Wicker Park & Bucktown: #9 of 10 in Chicago, 4.6/10
Indie shops, bars and live music, one Blue Line ride from O'Hare. Ninth: a walkable neighborhood with bars, music and a direct Blue Line to O'Hare; held back by few hotels, the weakest value and distance from the lake.
Wicker Park and Bucktown center on Six Corners, where Milwaukee, North and Damen avenues meet, with vintage and record stores, bookshops, music venues, cocktail bars and some of the city's most talked-about restaurants. The 606, an elevated trail on an old rail line, runs along the north edge, and the Blue Line stops at Damen and Division with trains to O'Hare and the Loop around the clock.
It feels like a real neighborhood, which is both the draw and the drawback: hotels are few, and the lake, museums and Mag Mile are a train ride away. Local writers say it shines on a longer or repeat visit. Skip it on a short first trip or with young kids.
- Best for: food lovers, nightlife
- Skip it if: it's a short first trip; you're traveling with young kids
- Getting around: Blue Line at Damen and Division, 24 hours, about 15 minutes to the Loop and about 30 to O'Hare with no transfer; buses on Milwaukee, North and Damen. The neighborhood itself is very walkable.
- After dark: Busy late around Six Corners and Milwaukee Avenue with bars and live music; side streets quiet down quickly.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $410 a night
