Axel's take on Streeterville & the Magnificent Mile: #3 of 10 in Chicago, 6.9/10
Lakefront, shopping and Navy Pier on the doorstep, with calm, polished evenings. Third for Navy Pier, the lakefront and the Mag Mile on foot; held back by average hotel scores, middling value and L stops only on its western edge.
Streeterville runs east from Michigan Avenue to the lake, putting the Magnificent Mile's flagship stores, Water Tower Place, Navy Pier, Ohio Street Beach and the Museum of Contemporary Art within a short walk. Large full-service hotels cluster here, and the lakefront path makes morning runs and stroller walks easy. After years of empty storefronts, local news reports the Mile filling back up with new retailers.
Evenings are calmer than in River North, and dining leans to hotel restaurants and steakhouses. The L only touches the western edge, so many trips start with a bus or a walk, and there is no direct train to either airport. Skip it if nightlife or a local feel matters more than convenience.
- Best for: families, luxury travelers, shopping
- Skip it if: nightlife is a priority; you want a local, non-touristy feel
- Getting around: Red Line at Grand and Chicago on the western edge plus frequent buses on Michigan Avenue; Navy Pier, the beach and the Mag Mile are walkable and Millennium Park is about 25 minutes on foot. No direct airport train: Red Line to a Blue Line transfer, or a cab.
- After dark: Calm and well lit most nights; on some warm weekend evenings large teen gatherings near Navy Pier and the River East theater have drawn a heavy police presence.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $338 a night · usually 9% under the public rate
