Axel's take on Lakeview & Wrigleyville: #8 of 10 in Chicago, 4.8/10
Wrigley Field, Northalsted and bars galore: a fun base, far from downtown. Eighth: the best value score of any area, solid hotels and Wrigley Field on the doorstep; held back by a 20-minute ride to the downtown sights.
Lakeview holds two of Chicago's best-known nightlife pockets: Wrigleyville, where the bars around Wrigley Field fill before and after every Cubs game, and Northalsted, the first officially designated gay village in the United States, along Halsted Street. Southport and Broadway add brunch spots and indie shops, and the lakefront parks are a short walk east.
The Red Line at Addison and Belmont reaches the Loop in about twenty minutes, so downtown sightseeing means a daily commute. Game days and big weekends like Pride and Market Days bring crowds, noise and higher rates. Stay here for baseball or Northalsted; skip it on a first trip built around downtown sights or if you want quiet nights.
- Best for: sports fans, LGBTQ+ travelers, nightlife, travelers on a budget
- Skip it if: you want quiet nights; your plans are mostly downtown
- Getting around: Red Line at Addison and Belmont, Brown Line at Belmont, Southport and Wellington; about 20 minutes to the Loop. No direct airport train: transfer to the Blue Line downtown or take a cab to O'Hare.
- After dark: Loud and crowded around Clark and Addison on game nights and along Halsted on weekends; side streets toward the lake are calm.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $305 a night
