Axel's take: 9.1/10

Food and thoughtful service make this a standout, but check recent maintenance before booking. A luxury all-inclusive beach resort with separate family and adults-only sections, scored for what it is.

Grand Velas Riviera Maya is a luxury all-inclusive that largely earns its premium positioning. Expedia and Tripadvisor guests consistently praise attentive concierges, excellent food and meticulous upkeep; spacious suites strengthen the case. We'd particularly recommend it for families wanting proper restaurants rather than buffet-led dining. Choose beachfront Ambassador for convenience; jungle-set Zen Grand means shuttle rides to the beach.

The beach is the main compromise: seaweed can undermine swimming despite cleanup efforts. Dinner reservations also need planning, and spa treatments cost extra. September 2026 guests reported renovation noise and temporary closures of the kids’ and teens’ clubs and Ambassador gym. Azul restaurant was scheduled to reopen September 26, but the other facilities’ reopening status remains unverified. Confirm those details before committing. We'd skip it if dependable sea swimming or a compact, entirely walkable resort matters more than food and service.

• Best for: Families wanting luxury all-inclusive convenience; Travelers who prioritize food and service; Couples choosing the adults-only section

• Watch out for: Seaweed can compromise beach swimming; Zen Grand requires beach shuttles; Confirm club and gym reopening after September maintenance

• Location: Beachfront outside central Playa del Carmen; Zen Grand sits inland within the resort.

• Rooms: Generously sized suites; choose carefully between jungle, ocean-view and oceanfront sections.

• Cleanliness: Consistently strong feedback, including exceptionally high Expedia cleanliness ratings.

• Service: Personal concierges and warm, attentive staff are recurring strengths across review sites.

• Amenities: Multiple pools, eight restaurants and SE Spa; recent club and gym closures need checking.

• Fees and surprises: Spa treatments are extra; reserve dinners early and verify current maintenance impacts.
