Axel's take: 8.7/10

A strong beach all-inclusive whose staff and cleanliness outshine its luxury credentials. a lively, family-friendly beachfront all-inclusive, not an ultra-luxury resort, scored for what it is.

Riu Playacar is a family-friendly beachfront all-inclusive that we'd choose for an easy, activity-filled vacation rather than five-star polish. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the hardworking staff, spacious rooms and thorough housekeeping; Booking.com also scores cleanliness and service strongly. The beach, varied dining and entertainment make it a strong pick for families and sociable couples.

The trade-offs are worth knowing: food earns mostly positive feedback but isn't consistently impressive, and guests on both Tripadvisor and Expedia mention hot communal areas with limited air-conditioned space for evening socializing. Sargassum can also spoil swimming despite regular beach clearing. We'd skip it for a hushed romantic retreat or destination dining, but recommend it for a cheerful, well-run resort holiday.

• Best for: families wanting activities and easy meals; sociable couples; beach-focused all-inclusive travelers

• Watch out for: sargassum can affect swimming; hot lobby and communal areas; dining quality varies

• Location: Directly on Playacar beach, with central Playa del Carmen a short taxi ride away.

• Rooms: Guests generally describe spacious, comfortable rooms rather than cutting-edge luxury.

• Cleanliness: A standout: repeated housekeeping praise, backed by strong Booking.com and Expedia category ratings.

• Service: Friendly, energetic staff are the most consistent highlight across recent reviews.

• Amenities: RIU confirms outdoor pools, a swim-up bar, children's activities, gym, spa and nightly entertainment.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia lists a city tax payable at the property despite the all-inclusive package.
