Axel's take: 8.5/10

Strong all-inclusive value if you want activity rather than beachfront luxury. A lively, mid-range all-inclusive resort in Playacar, not directly on the beach, scored for what it is.

Riu Tequila is a lively, mid-range all-inclusive in Playacar, not the luxury beachfront resort its listed five stars might suggest. It's a strong pick for sociable travelers who want plenty included. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the hardworking staff, clean rooms and energetic entertainment; their strong overall ratings support that picture. Multiple pools, themed restaurants and daytime access to Riu Yucatan and Riu Playacar add variety.

The main compromise is the beach: expect roughly a ten-minute walk from the lobby or a shuttle ride, rather than sand outside your room. Recent guests also describe a rowdy swim-up pool, while some mention tired room details and limited shower privacy. Food generally earns praise, though variety divides opinion. We'd skip it for a quiet honeymoon or polished luxury; it makes more sense for friends, active couples and families who enjoy organized entertainment.

• Best for: Friends seeking a social all-inclusive; Active couples; Families who enjoy organized entertainment

• Watch out for: Beach requires a walk or shuttle; Rowdy swim-up pool and party atmosphere; Some showers lack privacy

• Location: In Playacar, set back from the beach; guests report roughly ten minutes on foot from the lobby.

• Rooms: Generally clean and comfortable, but some guests flag dated details and insufficient shower privacy.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent Tripadvisor and Expedia reviews.

• Service: Friendly, hardworking restaurant, bar and entertainment staff receive repeated praise.

• Amenities: Four outdoor pools plus a children's pool, kids' club, gym, spa and RIU Party events.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia lists a city tax payable at the property; there are no elevators, and spa treatments cost extra.
