Axel's take: 7.5/10

Good downtown value, but noise and uneven room upkeep are the compromises. A no-frills 3-star downtown hotel with an outdoor pool, scored for what it is.

Hotel Colonial is a no-frills 3-star downtown base, now part of Grupo Kavia, rather than a beach resort. We'd consider it for an inexpensive, mostly out-and-about stay: the beach, Quinta Avenida and ferry are within walking distance, and the outdoor pool is a useful extra. Booking.com and Expedia guests regularly praise cleanliness, helpful staff and value; their overall ratings sit just below eight out of ten.

The trade-offs are basic, sometimes dated rooms and inconsistent peace and quiet. Reviews across sites mention late-night music and noise carrying between rooms, while some guests report slow hot water or bathroom maintenance issues. A July 2026 Tripadvisor guest also reported noisy building work; whether that continues is unconfirmed, so ask before booking. We'd skip it for light sleepers or anyone expecting polished facilities and reliable daytime quiet.

• Best for: Budget-conscious couples; Travelers spending most days exploring; Car-free downtown stays

• Watch out for: Late-night music and weak sound insulation; Uneven bathroom maintenance; Building work reported in July 2026; current status unconfirmed

• Location: Walkable downtown setting near Quinta Avenida, the beach, ADO terminal and ferry.

• Rooms: Basic air-conditioned rooms; condition varies, with recurring noise and some plumbing complaints.

• Cleanliness: Generally positive on the larger booking sites, though individual guests report lapses.

• Service: Helpful reception staff earn repeated praise, but problem handling is not uniformly strong.

• Amenities: Outdoor pool, free Wi-Fi, luggage storage and 24-hour reception; breakfast inclusion depends on the booking.

• Fees and surprises: Local/environmental tax is collected at the property; no on-site parking, and building-work status needs checking.
