Axel's take: 8.9/10

A strong downtown base with spacious rooms, helpful staff and useful included extras. a practical 3-star downtown hotel near Fifth Avenue, scored for what it is.

This practical 3-star Holiday Inn Express is a strong pick for exploring Playa del Carmen rather than staying inside a resort. Fifth Avenue, restaurants and shopping are close, with the beach a short walk away. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise spacious, clean rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff. Included breakfast, free parking and a rooftop pool make it good value for travelers spending their days out.

The trade-offs are mostly about expectations: this is not beachfront, the gym is basic, and there is no full-service restaurant. Breakfast earns plenty of praise, but limited choice comes up across review sites. We'd choose it for a straightforward, comfortable town stay; we'd skip it for a beach-resort atmosphere or extensive dining and leisure facilities.

• Best for: families exploring Playa del Carmen; couples who prefer eating out; travelers with rental cars

• Watch out for: not directly on the beach; breakfast variety can feel limited; basic gym and no full-service restaurant

• Location: Central and walkable, close to Fifth Avenue and shopping; the beach is a short walk away.

• Rooms: Guests consistently praise generous space and comfortable beds; IHG lists microwaves and mini-fridges.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall, with repeated recent praise for clean rooms and attentive housekeeping.

• Service: Friendly, helpful reception and breakfast staff are recurring strengths across guest reviews.

• Amenities: Rooftop outdoor pool, small gym, included buffet breakfast and free Wi-Fi.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is complimentary but limited, with height restrictions; early arrival or late departure may incur fees.
