Axel's take on Hauptbahnhof & Central: #3 of 9 in Zurich, 8.4/10
The practical winner for rail trips, short stays and easy arrivals. Rail connections and plentiful nearby food make it exceptionally practical, but traffic, station activity and modest value keep it behind the historic leaders.
Stay around HB and Central when your Zurich visit includes several train journeys. The station has everyday shopping and food even on Sundays, Niederdorf begins across the river, and the Swiss National Museum is immediately behind the tracks. Central also gives you the Polybahn up to the university terrace. Convenience here does not mean being stranded outside the interesting part of town.
You do exchange some charm for traffic, crossings and station activity. Bahnhofquai tram-stop reconstruction is scheduled to continue until mid-December 2026, complicating street-level transfers. Choose this over a lakeside neighborhood if connections matter more than a leisurely doorstep atmosphere.
- Best for: travelers without a car, first-time visitors, business trips and conventions, museums and culture
- Skip it if: You want a quiet residential setting; Your ideal stay revolves around the lake
- Getting around: HB has direct ZRH trains taking about 15 minutes; Central has trams 6, 7, 10 and 15, and the Old Town is walkable; check temporary stop locations during the 2026 works.
- After dark: Station restaurants, travelers and nearby Niederdorf keep this an active evening setting rather than a quiet retreat.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $290 a night

How to choose
- Choose Hotel Schweizerhof Zürich if you want traditional hospitality, soundproofed rooms and the station directly opposite.
- Choose Fred Hotel Hauptbahnhof if you want renovated, air-conditioned rooms steps from the trains without a luxury premium.
- Choose Aparthotel Adagio Zurich Center if you need a kitchen or a one-bedroom apartment for a family stay.
What paying more buys
Fred Hotel Hauptbahnhof costs more than Hotel Montana but brings renovated, air-conditioned rooms instead of tired interiors and summer heat. Hotel Schweizerhof Zürich is one of the pricier picks, adding traditional hospitality, soundproofing and an opposite-station address. Its premium is harder to justify for a brief overnight spent mostly asleep. Typical rates with Axel here run from $193 a night at Hotel Montana Zürich to $762 at Hotel Schweizerhof Zürich (last 30 days).
