Axel's take on Oerlikon & Messe: #8 of 9 in Zurich, 6.0/10
Stay for the Messe, major events or northern Zurich business. Good hotel value and useful event venues cannot offset the distance from Zurich’s main sights for a conventional city break.
Oerlikon is a functioning town within Zurich, not just somewhere to sleep near the exhibition halls. Around the station and Marktplatz you get everyday shops and a produce market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Farther east, Messe Zürich, Hallenstadion and Theater 11 explain why many visitors choose it. The distinction between a station address and an exhibition-area address matters for daily convenience.
For a conventional city break, we would stay farther south. Fast trains make the commute manageable, but they do not put the lake or Old Town outside your door. Choose Oerlikon when your event or office is here, or when practical everyday services matter more than historic surroundings.
- Best for: business trips and conventions, sports fans, travelers on a budget
- Skip it if: You want to walk home from Old Town evenings; You have no plans in northern Zurich
- Getting around: Oerlikon has direct S2/S16/S24 trains to ZRH and frequent HB services; tram 50 and buses 61/62 link the station with Messe/Hallenstadion.
- After dark: Expect event-driven crowds near Hallenstadion and Theater 11 rather than a continuous nightlife district; check what is on during your stay.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $174 a night

What paying more buys
Acasa Suites costs more than ibis Zurich Messe-Airport but provides more comfortable modern rooms, sauna and steam facilities, and self-service laundry. Courtyard by Marriott Zurich North also charges more for generously sized refurbished rooms, though its gym is small. For a single event night, those upgrades may matter less than proximity to your venue. Typical rates with Axel here run from $119 a night at ibis Zurich Messe-Airport to $248 at Acasa Suites Zurich Oerlikon (last 30 days).
