Axel's take on Bahnhofstrasse & Lindenhof: #2 of 9 in Zurich, 8.4/10
Choose this side of the Old Town for shopping and quieter evenings. Excellent hotels, shopping and sightseeing access earn second place, but value is weak and the main boulevard has less neighborhood character.
Bahnhofstrasse gives you the grand shopping boulevard; Rennweg, Augustinergasse and the climb to Lindenhof supply the older, smaller-scale Zurich just behind it. You can alternate between watch windows, chocolate shops, river views and the lake without making a special journey. Stay here if you want a polished central base rather than a nightlife address.
The trade-off is atmosphere: the main boulevard is more about shopping and business than neighborhood life. Most shops close on Sundays, and the livelier bar streets are across the river or farther west. We would choose the historic side lanes over the busiest tram frontage.
- Best for: shopping, luxury travelers, couples
- Skip it if: You want nightlife on your doorstep; You prefer an informal residential neighborhood
- Getting around: Walk to Lindenhof, both riverbanks and Bürkliplatz; trams 7, 11 and 13 serve Bahnhofstrasse, with direct ZRH trains from HB at its northern end.
- After dark: Expect dinner and cocktail stops rather than a continuous party strip; shopping activity fades when stores close.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $742 a night

How to choose
- Choose Widder Hotel if individual architecture, knowledgeable service and a serious bar matter more than a swimming pool.
- Choose Hotel Glockenhof if you want helpful service and larger family-room options without paying the neighborhood's luxury rates.
- Choose VISIONAPARTMENTS Zurich Brandschenkestrasse if you want a much cheaper kitchenette base and can handle remote support and self-check-in.
What paying more buys
Hotel Glockenhof is cheaper than most here yet provides helpful staff, air conditioning and a courtyard. Widder Hotel adds individual architecture and concierge attention; Baur au Lac adds larger standard doubles and a private lakeside park. Neither premium is necessary if you mainly want a central sightseeing base. Typical rates with Axel here run from $161 a night at VISIONAPARTMENTS Zurich Brandschenkestrasse to $1,516 at Baur au Lac (last 30 days).
