Axel's take on Dadaocheng: #6 of 9 in Taipei, 7.4/10
Stay for old Taipei’s streets, not door-to-door metro convenience. The best hotel value rewards travelers who accept longer station walks, with historic streets compensating for less impressive hotels and fewer doorstep options.
Dihua Street gives Dadaocheng its identity: merchant buildings, fabric sellers, tea shops, medicinal herbs and small businesses sharing old premises. Yongle Market and the Xia-Hai City God Temple make heritage part of everyday street life rather than a separate sightseeing excursion. The riverfront offers a useful change of scene.
Stay here for architecture, browsing and a slower rhythm, especially on a return visit. The compromise is the walk to rail: Beimen works for the southern streets, while Daqiaotou suits the northern end. That extra leg becomes noticeable in heat or rain. Choose somewhere else if effortless transfers and a busy evening immediately outside matter more than historic character.
- Best for: museums and culture, a quiet stay
- Skip it if: You want a station beside your door; You want busy streets throughout the evening
- Getting around: Green at Beimen or Orange at Daqiaotou, depending on the street; allow a walk. Dihua Street and the wharf are walkable. TPE: Airport MRT to Main, then walk/taxi; TSA: Brown/Green toward Beimen.
- After dark: Expect quieter shopping streets after businesses close; evening activity concentrates around Ningxia and the wharf rather than throughout Dadaocheng.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $87 a night
