Axel's take on Taipei Main Station: #3 of 9 in Taipei, 8.1/10
Choose convenience over charm when trains shape your trip. Extensive nearby options and strong hotel value lift this practical rail base, but hotel quality and neighborhood appeal trail the leaders.
Taipei Main Station is the practical choice when airport transfers, day trips and onward trains dominate your plans. High-speed rail, conventional rail, two city metro lines and the Airport MRT meet through a sprawling station complex. Underground shopping passages and the streets around Huaining Street provide plenty of everyday distractions.
The catch is that being near the station does not mean being near your platform: different rail systems require substantial walking. Visitors repeatedly prefer neighboring Ximending or Zhongshan for atmosphere. Stay here for an efficient short visit or rail-heavy itinerary; skip it if wandering attractive streets is the main pleasure of your trip.
- Best for: travelers without a car, travelers on a budget
- Skip it if: Neighborhood atmosphere matters more than rail access; You dislike large station interchanges
- Getting around: Red and Blue lines, TRA, HSR and Airport MRT; Ximending and Zhongshan are walkable. TPE has direct Airport MRT service; TSA requires Blue/Brown via Zhongxiao Fuxing. Check which station entrance serves your train.
- After dark: Expect meals and arriving travelers rather than a nightlife district; visitors favor nearby Ximending or Zhongshan for evenings out.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $106 a night

How to choose
- Choose Hotel Resonance Taipei, Tapestry Collection by Hilton if modern, exceptionally clean rooms and complimentary laundry outweigh the lack of full-service dining.
- Choose Roaders Plus Hotel Taipei Station if young children will use the play areas and you will book beyond the smallest windowless doubles.
- Choose APause Inn if you want one of the cheaper bases near the station and can accept thin walls.
What paying more buys
APause Inn keeps costs down but brings small-room and thin-wall compromises. Roaders Plus adds children’s play areas and snacks, while much pricier Hotel Resonance offers modern, well-maintained rooms and complimentary laundry. Rail-focused travelers needing little beyond a bed may prefer Hotel Relax II’s cheaper practical base. Typical rates with Axel here run from $60 a night at APause Inn to $287 at Sheraton Grand Taipei Hotel (last 30 days).
