Axel's take on Zhongshan: #2 of 9 in Taipei, 8.2/10
Taipei’s best all-round base pairs interesting backstreets with straightforward transport. Outstanding doorstep variety, strong hotels and distinctive backstreets earn second place, held back by weak hotel value and less convenient access.
Around Zhongshan station, Chifeng Street mixes older workshop buildings with coffee shops, independent fashion and specialty restaurants. Zhongshan North Road brings a more polished frontage, while the lanes reward unhurried exploring. You get a recognisable neighborhood rather than just somewhere convenient to sleep, with enough variety for several evenings.
Locals and returning visitors repeatedly recommend this pocket over the station frontage or busier Ximending. It is our easiest recommendation for a first or second visit. The qualification is street choice: weekend shopping crowds and the evening businesses around Linsen North Road mean that Zhongshan is not uniformly peaceful. Choose your immediate surroundings, not just the district name.
- Best for: first-time visitors, couples, food lovers, LGBTQ+ travelers
- Skip it if: You need complete nighttime quiet; Your days revolve around eastern Taipei
- Getting around: Red and Green lines meet at Zhongshan; Chifeng Street and Shuanglian are walkable. TPE: Airport MRT to Main, then Red; TSA: Brown to Nanjing Fuxing, then Green.
- After dark: Restaurants and bars keep the lanes active after shopping; the atmosphere is generally less hectic than Ximending, according to visitors.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $217 a night
