Axel's take on Playacar: #5 of 7 in Playa del Carmen, 6.1/10
A calmer beach base, but choose your phase carefully. Playacar offers strong hotels and a calmer beach setting, but weaker value, sparse independent dining and variable walkability lower its rank.
Playacar feels deliberately separate from downtown: controlled entrances, landscaped roads, beach houses, resorts and a golf course. Phase I is the better fit if you want a residential beach stay with Centro still accessible on foot. Phase II spreads around the golf course, with a more self-contained resort rhythm and longer internal journeys.
That distinction matters more than the Playacar label alone. A place near the town entrance and one deep along Paseo Xaman-Ha offer very different holidays. Families and golfers gain breathing room, but independent diners should check the actual walking route. Skip deeper Phase II if you expect spontaneous trips into town several times daily.
- Best for: families, sports fans
- Skip it if: You want frequent spontaneous trips into Centro; You assume every Playacar address is equally walkable
- Getting around: Phase I can work on foot; deeper Phase II often needs taxis; CUN/TQO: transfer or ADO plus taxi; Tren Maya Conecta serves Plaza Playacar.
- After dark: Evenings revolve around resort entertainment or quiet residential roads; returning from Centro is less convenient deeper into Phase II.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $273 a night

What paying more buys
The Reef Playacar offers a smaller beachfront setting for less than most here, but rooms and dining are uneven. Riu Palace Riviera Maya costs more for comfortable junior suites, standout upkeep and attentive service. Budget-minded beachgoers may not need that upgrade; pricier Iberostar Waves Tucán remains closed through November 30, 2026, with refurbishment results untested. Typical rates with Axel here run from $213 a night at Sandos Playacar Hotel All Inclusive to $567 at Iberostar Waves Tucán - All Inclusive (last 30 days).
