Hotels in CancunA compact, mid-range beachfront resort with optional all-inclusive plans
8.0/10
A strong beach-first pick, with modest rooms and uneven dining.
The Reef Playacar is a compact, mid-range beachfront resort in Playa del Carmen—not Cancún—with tropical gardens and low-rise villas rather than a sprawling hotel block. It's a strong pick for families and couples who prioritize beach access and manageable grounds over luxury. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise cleanliness and friendly staff; the setting is more consistently loved than the rooms or food.
Expect some dated décor, occasional noise complaints and dining that divides opinion, particularly the buffet. Check your exact meal plan: breakfast-only and all-inclusive bookings coexist, and premium privileges differ. Seasonal sargassum can affect swimming. An August 2026 announcement schedules renovations from late 2026 for a 2027 Marriott conversion, although the hotel's FAQ still says none are planned; confirm disruption before booking. We'd skip it for gourmet dining, polished luxury or a stay without renovation uncertainty.

Best for: Beach-first families; Couples wanting a smaller resort; Travelers prioritizing setting over luxury
Watch out for: Uneven dining and some dated rooms; Meal-plan and premium-access restrictions; Late-2026 renovation plans need confirmation
Location: Beachfront in gated Playacar, Playa del Carmen, with downtown accessible—not in Cancún.
Rooms: Mostly garden-view rooms; guests often find them comfortable, but dated décor and noise recur.
Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent guest feedback, especially rooms and grounds.
Service: Friendly staff receive frequent praise, though restaurant service can be uneven.
Amenities: Pools, beachfront, gym, spa and dining; treatments and some privileges cost extra.
Fees and surprises: Confirm meal-plan inclusions; Expedia lists city and destination charges, and renovation timing remains unclear.
