Axel's take on Haidhausen & Au: #4 of 9 in Munich, 7.4/10
The best balance of neighborhood calm, family appeal and useful rail. Residential character and well-rated hotels make a balanced base, but fewer doorstep sights and less immediate Old Town access keep it fourth.
Stay here for café mornings, residential streets and walks beside the Isar. Wiener Platz, Preysingstrasse and the French Quarter give Haidhausen its small-scale character; Au adds Mariahilfplatz and easy access to the Deutsches Museum. It is our strongest family choice and a particularly good place to settle into Munich rather than rush through it.
Choose the address with transport in mind. Visitors in a January 2026 Reddit discussion praised Rosenheimer Platz for its connections and neighborhood feel. Deeper into Au, the walk to airport rail becomes less convenient. Skip this if you want every major Old Town sight immediately outside, or a concentrated late-night bar district.
- Best for: families, couples, a quiet stay
- Skip it if: You want Old Town sights immediately outside; You want concentrated late-night nightlife
- Getting around: S-Bahn serves Rosenheimer Platz and Ostbahnhof, with direct MUC S8 trains; U4/U5 serve Max-Weber-Platz and U1/U2 serve Kolumbusplatz near Au. Walk to the river and Deutsches Museum; FMM connects by coach through Hauptbahnhof.
- After dark: Expect restaurant and beer-garden evenings rather than continuous nightlife; Muffatwerk brings a livelier pocket beside the river.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $184 a night
