Axel's take on Mallory Square & Historic Seaport: #2 of 6 in Key West, 8.0/10
Stay here for sunsets, sailing departures and waterfront evenings on foot. The waterfront nearly matches Old Town, with slightly more on the doorstep and better value, but marginally weaker hotels, sightseeing access and character.
Front, Greene and Caroline streets put you between Mallory Square's sunset gathering and the Historic Seaport's harborwalk. Expect dockside restaurants, excursion boats, shops and live music rather than a broad swimming beach. This is an especially easy base when your plans revolve around sailing, seafood and wandering northern Duval.
The compromise is constant visitor activity: sunset crowds, busy waterfront businesses and nearby bar traffic. Recent visitors favor the harbor for its convenience, but don't mistake a waterfront address for a quiet one. Stay nearer the seaport's side streets if you want some separation from lower Duval's loudest frontage.
- Best for: first-time visitors, travelers without a car, food lovers, museums and culture
- Skip it if: You want a broad swimming beach outside; Sunset crowds and nearby music would spoil your stay
- Getting around: Walk the waterfront and northern Duval; Key West Rides offers on-demand trips from local stops, and taxis connect directly with EYW.
- After dark: Dockside music and lower-Duval bar traffic keep parts lively after the sunset gathering disperses; room placement matters.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $514 a night

How to choose
- Choose Simonton Court Historic Inn & Cottages if you want adults-only garden pools and personal service, and will check your room's layout and stairs.
- Choose Island City House Hotel if a kitchen and suite space matter for a family or longer stay.
- Choose Fitch Lodge - Key West Historic Inns if you want one of the cheapest bases near the seaport and can tolerate compact rooms and traffic noise.
What paying more buys
Fitch Lodge is cheaper than most here, with compact rooms and possible Eaton Street noise. Paying more for Simonton Court buys four garden pools and consistently warm service; Hyatt Centric adds waterfront balconies and a spa, but only a small pool and limited beach. Those upgrades aren't necessary if your days revolve around boat trips and sightseeing. Typical rates with Axel here run from $338 a night at Fitch Lodge - Key West Historic Inns to $682 at Hyatt Centric Key West Resort and Spa (last 30 days).
