Axel's take on Centro Internacional & La Macarena: #3 of 9 in Bogota, 7.4/10
A culture-first compromise that keeps the historic center within reach. The strongest combination of transport convenience and value supports a culture-rich stay, though hotels trail the leading northern neighborhoods.
Centro Internacional pairs office towers and major cultural institutions with La Macarena's smaller-scale streets above Carrera Séptima. The National Museum, modern art, the Planetarium and Salmona's Torres del Parque give the neighborhood substance beyond convenient geography. Around Carrera 4 and Calle 27, restaurants and galleries make evenings feel less businesslike than the avenues below.
This is our alternative to sleeping in La Candelaria when culture is the priority but you want a different evening setting. Expect uphill walking into La Macarena and choose your return route deliberately rather than treating every downtown block as interchangeable. It suits independent walkers and museum-focused stays; northern shopping and late clubbing still require separate journeys.
- Best for: museums and culture, travelers without a car, travelers on a budget
- Skip it if: Hills are a problem; You mainly want northern shopping and clubs
- Getting around: Museo Nacional TransMilenio and Carrera Séptima buses serve the area; museums and La Macarena dining are walkable. From BOG, M86 reaches Museo Nacional, followed by a walk uphill or a short taxi ride.
- After dark: La Macarena has an established dinner scene; use a booked ride when your return would involve quieter streets beyond the restaurant blocks.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $54 a night · usually 7% under the public rate
