Axel's take on Sants & Placa d'Espanya: #10 of 11 in Barcelona, 7.2/10
A practical rail-and-events base with real neighborhood life beyond the junctions. Strong hotels and useful rail connections help, but broader sightseeing access, nearby choice and character leave it behind more rounded bases.
Sants is more appealing when you leave the station frontage and find its shopping streets, markets and small squares. Carrer de Sants and Creu Coberta connect an everyday residential district with Plaça d'Espanya, where Montjuïc's museums and exhibition grounds become the main draw. This is a sensible base for rail arrivals, onward journeys and trips with a strong events component.
The drawback is that transport convenience does not equal old-town immersion. Expect journeys to the Gothic Quarter and waterfront, and substantial roads around Espanya. L8 construction also affects the square and nearby Gran Via. Choose a neighborhood street rather than a major junction if the area is to feel welcoming beyond its practical advantages.
- Best for: travelers on a budget, business trips and conventions
- Skip it if: You want the old town outside your door; You dislike major roads and active infrastructure works
- Getting around: Sants has L3/L5 and mainline trains; Espanya has L1/L3 and FGC links toward Gran Via. Walk uphill toward Montjuïc. BCN: direct R2 Nord from T2 to Sants, or Aerobús to Espanya.
- After dark: Residential streets and local squares offer a different evening from the station frontage; expect neighborhood activity rather than an old-town bar crawl.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $242 a night · usually 7% under the public rate
