Where to stay in Tokyo for sports fans: Odaiba & Ariake

Updated October 15, 2026 · Ranked by Axel from research, its own hotel reviews and recent rates · How we rank

Odaiba & Ariake leads for sports fans when an Ariake event anchors the trip, trading broad sightseeing convenience for proximity to bay-area venues. Ikebukuro is runner-up and a better match for some other events, with the Marunouchi Line to Korakuen for Tokyo Dome and Seibu's event-day services for Belluna Dome.

Odaiba offers waterfront promenades, Rainbow Bridge views, large shopping complexes and family attractions; Ariake is more about exhibition halls and sports venues. The broad streets and bay setting can be welcome after crowded city days. Stay here when Tokyo Big Sight or an Ariake event is the reason for your trip, rather than an occasional outing.

Yurikamome serves waterfront stops; Rinkai trains serve Tokyo Teleport and Kokusai-tenjijo, with through-services toward Shibuya and Shinjuku. Waterfront attractions are spread out; HND needs a rail transfer or airport bus, and NRT requires connections or a bus.
    After dark
Bridge views and quiet promenades rather than bar-hopping; events can briefly turn otherwise calm stations into crowded departure points.

Ikebukuro works when you want a busy Tokyo neighborhood without making the most famous tourist districts your home. Sunshine City, anime shops and everyday restaurants give the eastern streets plenty of purpose, while the western side adds the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre and smaller neighborhood streets. Regular visitors on Reddit appreciate its combination of local routines and substantial transport connections.

This is Tokyo at its most orderly: the red-brick station, Marunouchi's office towers and the broad approaches to the Imperial Palace. Station shopping and food passages provide plenty to do without another train, while Ginza and Nihonbashi are reasonable walks from the appropriate side. It is particularly useful when Tokyo is one stop on a longer rail itinerary.

Shinjuku delivers the Tokyo many visitors picture: department stores, neon, tiny drinking alleys and restaurants that keep going late. Omoide Yokocho and Golden Gai suit bar-hopping, Shinjuku Gyoen offers a daytime escape, and Ni-chome puts the city's main LGBTQ nightlife district within walking distance. Choose it when walking home after dinner matters.

Treat Ueno and Akihabara as different choices, not one uniform neighborhood. Around Ueno and Okachimachi you get museum-filled Ueno Park, Ameyoko's market lanes and informal eating; farther south, Akihabara is about games, electronics and anime shops. Walking between them is worthwhile, but choose your nearest station rather than assuming everything is next door.

Shibuya puts the crossing, fashion stores, music and late dinners at your door. Asakusa makes the strongest case for sleeping somewhere with a recognizable character of its own. Sensoji, Nakamise and the Sumida River give early mornings and evening walks a purpose before you board a train. There are traditional food shops and quieter backstreets beyond the busiest temple approaches, though Nakamise itself is thoroughly commercial and often crowded.

Ginza is my most balanced first-visit pick if you prefer dinner and a walk to clubbing. Chuo-dori's flagships, department-store food halls and Kabukiza sit beside a more everyday Tokyo in Tsukiji, where the outer market rewards an early start. Roppongi Hills and Tokyo Midtown make this a strong base for art, polished dining and evening drinks.
