Salamanca & Retiro
handsome residential blocks · designer boutiques · park walks · dressier dining
8.0/10
Residential streets are generally calmer, but avoid assuming that Jorge Juan or a club-side frontage will be quiet.

Salamanca is Madrid in a more composed register: handsome apartment buildings, boutiques along Serrano and Ortega y Gasset, and restaurants around Jorge Juan. Retiro adds the obvious family advantage of a substantial park nearby. Stay here if morning walks, comfortable residential streets and dressing up for dinner matter more than stepping straight into the historic core.

- You want old-town nightlife outside your door; You prioritize a budget-oriented atmosphere
- Getting around
- Serrano/Velázquez have L4 and Retiro L2; walk the Golden Mile and park; from MAD, change from L8 to L4 at Mar de Cristal.
- After dark
- Residential streets are generally calmer, but Jorge Juan and selected dining and club streets remain active late.
