Axel's take: 8.1/10

A strong pick for friendly service and exploring town, rather than five-star luxury. A compact, mid-range beachfront all-inclusive near downtown, scored for what it is.

Buenaventura Grand is a compact, family-friendly beachfront all-inclusive that makes more sense as a comfortable mid-range resort than a five-star luxury escape. Its biggest advantage is location: you can combine pool time with walks to the Malecón and neighborhood restaurants. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the welcoming staff and clean, comfortable rooms. We'd choose it for an easygoing vacation with access to town.

The compromises are food consistency and beach quality. Some guests enjoy the restaurants; others find the buffet repetitive or mediocre, and the shoreline can be rocky. Expedia also currently warns of construction at a neighboring building, with possible noise disturbance. There is an adults-only pool area, but this remains a family resort. We'd skip it for guaranteed quiet, gourmet dining or a soft-sand swimming beach.

• Best for: Families wanting a manageable all-inclusive; Travelers who like exploring town; Couples comfortable with a family atmosphere

• Watch out for: Neighboring construction and possible noise; Rocky shoreline; Uneven buffet quality and variety

• Location: Beachfront in Cinco de Diciembre, within walking distance of the Malecón, shops and restaurants.

• Rooms: Generally praised as comfortable and clean; the hotel advertises renovated rooms without specifying a completion date.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength in recent guest feedback, especially for guestrooms.

• Service: Warm, attentive staff are a recurring highlight across Expedia and Tripadvisor.

• Amenities: Outdoor pools include children's and adults-only areas; restaurants, kids' club and Shakti Spa add variety.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia flags neighboring construction; its listed December 31 total includes the mandatory gala dinner.
