Axel's take on Hotel Zone: #3 of 6 in Puerto Vallarta, 5.7/10
The practical beach-resort compromise, with more road crossings than neighborhood wandering. The Hotel Zone balances resort stays with reasonable town access, but scattered dining, broad roads and weaker value hold it below the walkable central neighborhoods.
The Hotel Zone suits travelers who want a beach-and-pool holiday without committing to the more detached northern resorts. Francisco Medina Ascencio links stretches of beachfront around Las Glorias, Los Tules and Playa de Oro, with shopping at La Isla and other malls. The experience is more resort frontage and boulevard than small streets.
Its main compromise is the walk between things: broad roads and long resort blocks interrupt casual exploring. Southern Las Glorias works better for frequent Centro visits; farther north, expect more bus or taxi trips. Choose it for convenient resort downtime, but skip it if spontaneous evening walks are the point of your holiday.
- Best for: families, business trips and conventions, shopping
- Skip it if: You want an intimate old-town setting; You expect to walk between every outing
- Getting around: Centro-marked buses run along Francisco Medina Ascencio; nearby beaches and malls may be walkable, depending on the address; reach the area from PVR by authorized airport taxi.
- After dark: Expect resort entertainment and restaurant outings rather than one continuous street-nightlife district; Centro remains a separate outing.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $208 a night · usually 10% under the public rate

- Avenida México near Playa Camarones. The southern end suits travelers combining beach time with downtown meals and Malecón evenings rather than staying entirely inside a resort. Hotels here: Buenaventura Grand Hotel & Great Moments - All Inclusive, Sheraton Buganvilias Puerto Vallarta.
- Clemente Orozco near Las Glorias. Stay around this beach-access stretch for nearby cafés, everyday shops and trips across the boulevard to Versalles dining. Hotels here: Canto del Sol Puerto Vallarta All Inclusive, Hotel Suites Mar Elena.
- Medina Ascencio near Los Tules. This resort-and-shopping stretch suits pool-focused stays with restaurant outings; the broad boulevard makes casual wandering less appealing. Hotels here: Fiesta Americana Puerto Vallarta All Inclusive & Spa, Villa del Palmar Beach Resort and Spa, Puerto Vallarta.
How to choose
- Choose Fiesta Americana Puerto Vallarta All Inclusive & Spa if you want a family all-inclusive where attentive service matters more than contemporary room finishes.
- Choose Sheraton Buganvilias Puerto Vallarta if you want strong pools and easier city exploring, not a sandy swimming beach.
- Choose Villa del Palmar Beach Resort and Spa, Puerto Vallarta if you need kitchen facilities and beachfront family space at a cheaper rate.
What paying more buys
Hotel Vallartasol is much cheaper than most here, offering a well-liked pool but no beachfront setting. Villa del Palmar adds beachfront suites and kitchen facilities while remaining cheaper than most; pricier Fiesta Americana adds family all-inclusive convenience and particularly warm service. Paying more is less worthwhile if you prefer local restaurants and spend your days exploring. Typical rates with Axel here run from $73 a night at Hotel Vallartasol to $467 at Fiesta Americana Puerto Vallarta All Inclusive & Spa (last 30 days).
The best hotels in Hotel Zone, ranked by Axel's take
Each hotel scored for what it is by Axel's own review; the rate is one stay Axel priced this week, beside the public rate for the same dates.
- Fiesta Americana Puerto Vallarta All Inclusive & Spa 8.5/10, beachfront 4-star all-inclusive geared toward families. Warm service and beachfront convenience outweigh dated rooms, but check club access carefully. Why it's here: a service-led beachfront family all-inclusive with a kids' club and convenient resort facilities. Accept: dated finishes; adults-only SONNE pool access requires eligible rooms.
- Sheraton Buganvilias Puerto Vallarta 8.4/10, large, upscale beachfront resort and convention hotel near downtown. A strong pool-and-city combination, but not the pick for a sandy swimming beach. Why it's here: a mid-priced combination of refreshed rooms, substantial pools and convenient city access. Accept: rocky beach, meal-plan exclusions and vacation-club sales approaches.
- Villa del Palmar Beach Resort and Spa, Puerto Vallarta 8.1/10, older, mid-range beachfront suite resort with optional all-inclusive dining. A dependable family beach base, provided you prioritize space over polish. Why it's here: cheaper beachfront family space with kitchen facilities, balconies and consistently praised cleanliness. Accept: older interiors, timeshare pressure and adjoining-facility closure uncertainty.
- Buenaventura Grand Hotel & Great Moments - All Inclusive 8.1/10, compact, mid-range beachfront all-inclusive near downtown. A strong pick for friendly service and exploring town, rather than five-star luxury. Why it's here: a manageable beachfront all-inclusive with warm service and walkable access to the Malecón. Accept: neighboring construction, rocky shoreline and uneven buffet quality.
- Hotel Vallartasol 7.7/10, simple, older 3-star hotel near Versalles, not on the beachfront. Good budget comfort with a well-liked pool, but rooms show their age. Why it's here: one of the cheapest pool bases here, with welcoming staff and nearby restaurant options. Accept: dated rooms, hard beds and patchy Wi-Fi; not beachfront.
- Hotel Suites Mar Elena 7.7/10, simple 3-star hotel with apartment-style suites in Las Glorias. Good bang for your buck near the beach, but check pool availability before booking. Why it's here: cheaper apartment-style space with nearby restaurants, beach access and convenient downtown buses. Accept: pool closures, traffic noise and uneven room condition.
- Hotel Hacienda Vallarta Playa Las Glorias 7.2/10, basic 3-star hotel with a courtyard pool near Las Glorias Beach. A useful budget base with friendly staff, but rooms need more consistency. Why it's here: a cheaper simple pool base with accommodating staff and restaurants within walking distance. Accept: variable rooms, occasional musty smells and pool-area noise.
- Canto del Sol Puerto Vallarta All Inclusive 7.1/10, older, mid-range family all-inclusive in the Hotel Zone. Friendly staff carry this family all-inclusive, but pool construction weakens the case. Why it's here: friendly activity and restaurant teams for families prioritizing all-inclusive activities over room polish. Accept: pool reopening unconfirmed; dated rooms and cross-street accommodation.
- Crown Paradise Club Puerto Vallarta All Inclusive 6.9/10, value-oriented beachfront all-inclusive for families. Good family entertainment, but tired rooms and frustrating dining reservations limit the appeal. Why it's here: children's entertainment first, with a water park, clubs, pools and evening shows. Accept: tired rooms, uneven housekeeping and frustrating dinner reservations.
