#6 of 9 hotels in Playacar by Axel's take. Playacar is #5 of 7 places to stay in Playa del Carmen. The best hotels in Playacar, ranked · Where to stay in Playa del Carmen

Axel's take: 7.9/10

Friendly service and a strong beach setting, but renovation work complicates the appeal. a lively, mid-range beachfront all-inclusive in Playacar, scored for what it is.

Riu Yucatan is a lively, mid-range beachfront all-inclusive, not a luxury retreat despite RIU’s five-star label. It’s a strong pick for families and sociable couples who prioritize beach access, activities and easy meals over polished rooms. Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise the hardworking staff and cleanliness. Multiple pools, a kids’ club and nightly entertainment give you plenty to do without leaving the resort.

The compromises are aging rooms, mixed food feedback and, importantly, construction. Sunwing lists La Margarita beach-club restaurant as closed through October 31, 2026, with its menu served in the main restaurant; recent guests describe disruptive drilling around the pools. A full-hotel renovation closure is also announced from April 4, 2027; confirm reopening dates before booking. We’d skip it for a quiet escape or a special occasion where room condition matters.

Best for: families wanting an active beach vacation; sociable couples; travelers prioritizing service over stylish rooms
Watch out for: La Margarita closure and construction noise; aging rooms and facilities; announced renovation closure from April 4, 2027
Location: Direct beachfront access in Playacar is a clear strength; seasonal seaweed can affect swimming.
Rooms: Generally comfortable and clean, but dated décor and maintenance shortcomings recur in guest feedback.
Cleanliness: A consistent positive across sources, with strong cleanliness ratings on Booking.com and Expedia.
Service: Friendly, hardworking restaurant, housekeeping and entertainment staff are the most consistent praise.
Amenities: Multiple outdoor pools, kids’ club, gym, entertainment and included dining; La Margarita is temporarily unavailable.
Fees and surprises: Local environmental tax is payable separately; confirm restaurant work and 2027 closure dates directly.
